PIU continue investigations by Chamitha Kuruppu The Presidential Investigation Unit (PIU) on Grade One Admissions is awaiting instructions from President Chandrika Kumaratunga to commence a fresh probe on irregular admissions of over 200 national schools. PIU Chief A.A. Wickramasinghe said that the Unit is unable to 'take any action' until President Kumaratunga arrives in the country. The President is currently in England on a private visit. According to Wickramasinghe, over 200 schools need be investigated individually in order to study complaints made by parents about irregular admissions. "President Kumaratunga will decide which schools need to be given priority since we can't commence investigations of all 200 schools," he noted. Until the President arrives, the PIU will continue investigations on three national schools in Colombo and two outstation schools, Wickramasinghe said. However, although recommended by the Unit, nearly 30-40 students who failed to gain admission, is yet to enter schools. According to Wickramasinghe apart from them, over 100 students residing within the qualified distance, have not been selected to any of the schools in the area. "There are no vacancies for these students in the schools," he said. |
