Another police, politico, underworld tie up? Crime Sunday by Jaympathy Jayasinghe Police view the grenade explosion opposite a popular restaurant in Colombo as a tip of the iceberg as something deeper and more sinister was being planned that day. Did someone passing-by lob a grenade at the jeep parked opposite the Amarawathie Restaurant at Mile-Post Avenue, Kollupitiya or was it that the explosion occurred spontaneously inside the jeep? What was the motive behind for some one to lob a grenade? These are queries that the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) is investigating following the grenade explosion where a Reserve Police Sub-Inspector and a nefarious drug dealer from Colombo were injured last Wednesday. Both of them had been inside the jeep at the time of the explosion. Did some one attempt to destroy the drug dealer? The drug dealer admitted to the National Hospital Colombo with injuries is reported to be out of danger. The Sub-Inspector with minor injuries was discharged from hospital and had sought out-door treatment. The Reserve Police Sub-Inspector with 15 years service is in fact a technician attached to the Radio-laboratory at the Police Communication Division. On the day of the incident he had accompanied the drug dealer to the restaurant in his jeep. The Sub-Inspector had told CCD officials that he had purchased the jeep from another person. But inquiries reveal that the jeep had not been registered in his name. What was the association of a Sub-Inspector with a drug dealer? What were they planning at the restaurant on that day? In fact the Police suspect the drug dealer was planning to transport a haul of drugs in the jeep accompanied by the Sub-Inspector. No one would ever suspect that a police officer was assisting the transportation of drugs. The Sub-Inspector in his statement had told CCD that he came to know the drug dealer through a well-known politician. The drug dealer is strongly suspected to be involved in the conspiracy of the killing of the most feared underworld figure Dammika Amarasinghe at Hulftsdorp Courts year before last. However due to lack of evidence the drug dealer was not taken into custody. Gangster Dammika Amarasinghe was shot dead by a person not connected to criminal activity when he was brought to Court. The Director Colombo Crime Division (CCD) SSP. Sarath Lugoda said that they had questioned and recorded the statements of more than 25 persons in connection with the grenade explosion. No one had been arrested in this connection with this episode. Further inquiries are being made to unravel the conspiracy the Sub-Inspector has had with the drug dealer. |
