by Chanuka Mannapperuma

The Central Provincial Council (CPC) plans to establish a Tourism Promotion Complex to boost the tourism industry mainly in the province.

This complex is now being built in Matale. The CPC and Department of Trade, Commerce and Tourism have jointly allocated a sum of Rs.40 million for this project. The complex consists of an Information Centre, Community Theatre and a Hotel School.

"The project commenced in 2002 and it has now entered into the third phase. It will be completed in the middle of the next year." a Council official told the Sunday Observer.

He said the main objective of this project is to promote provincial tourism while laying much emphasis on community participation.

The information centre seeks to give comprehensive information to foreign and local tourists about the Central Province. "If anyone wishes to tour the province, they can get all the details from this centre. It will give wider information to the tourists about attractive places in the province." he added.

He further said that the community theatre would facilitate the local artistes to show their talents. It will also provide them opportunities for holding exhibitions, workshops and unions.

The official said, that the hotel school project will provide proper training to the youth in the area to enable them to obtain employment and also to strive for self-employment opportunities.

The hotel school could accommodate 400 students."Youth can follow travel industry related courses at the hotel school and through that training, they will be able to pursue travel related self-employment opportunities", the official added.
