Visa overstayers to be rounded up by Jayantha Sri Nissanka The Department of Immigration and Emigration launched a special operation last week to nab thousands of foreigners who were overstaying in Sri Lanka. The new Controller of the Department of the Immigration and Emigration P.B. Abeykoon has instructed his officials to launch this operation. When contacted Controller Abeykoon said that many Asians were overstaying in Sri Lanka without extending 30 days visas. The Department had received information that many Asians were overstaying as they work in different establishments in Sri Lanka. When asked where were they working he said mostly in hotels, construction companies,brothels, etc. Controller Abeykoon said that many women from Thailand,China,India, Russia were working here as prostitutes. Labourers from China,Bangladesh, India were working in construction companies for low daily wages. Many Chinese men were working as cooks in restaurants. The controller warns that legal action too will be taken against these companies who have given employment to foreigners as cheap labour without permission from the Department. "No foreigner can work here with a 30 day visa. They need to obtain special permission", he noted. When asked what will be done after rounding up these foreigners he said that they would be detained in a detection camp for sometime and later deported. |
