Three more hydro power stations by Anura Maitipe The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has taken initiatives to set up three more hydro power stations to generate 239 megawatts with financial assistance from the People's Republic of China, spokesman for the CEB told the Sunday Observer. Under this project three hydropower stations will be set up at Ummaoya,Broadlend Ella and Ginganga.The Feasibility study of this project has been done, he added. The water used by Laksapana hydro power station will be re-used at Broden power station. The CEB intends to generate 40 megawatt from proposed Broden power station,150 megawatt from Ummaoya and 49 megawatt from Ginganga, he said. The diversion of Ummaoya is a multipurpose project.In addition to generation of electricity it will feed Kirindioya the feeding root of Lunugamvehera reservoir which is ruing short of water during dry season to irrigate over 1600 acres of paddy lands, he pointed out. The Ummaoya power station will be set up at Wellawaya. Broadland power station at Broadlend and Ginganga power station at Neluwa. The CEB will not tap any more water resources in future and this will be the last three hydro stations that will be set up in Sri Lanka, he added. |
