More funds for education Thihagoda group and Kamburupitiya special corr. The Government has increased financial allocations from this year for the progress and development of education in the country. Under the efficient leadership of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga a vast change has been made in the country's educational field, Ports and Civil Aviation Minister and Deputy Minister of Education Mangala Samaraweera said. He made these observations at a ceremony held at Vidyaniketha Vidyalaya, Sapugoda in Kamburupitiya. According to Minister Samaraweera, a recent survey reveals that Sri Lanka has come third in educational activities in the world. Every endeavour would be made by this government to improve the English language of students in remote areas. Over 13 schools in the district of Matara were ravaged and destroyed by the tidal wave catastrophe. Plans have been afoot to reconstruct them all. The top priority is to be extended to both human and physical resources development in state schools. A total of Rs. 40 million has been set apart for the development of schools in the Matara district alone, Minister Samaraweera said. Although Sri Lanka has been world famous as predominantly a Buddhist country it was replete with murders, tyre pyres, suicides and many acts of violence at the time of the previous reactionary regimes. That pathetic and sad situation has considerably been improved at the moment, Minister Samaraweera added. |
