CAA hard on soft drink water by Surekha Galagoda A consumer who complained against a soft drink manufacturer to the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) was paid a compensation of Rs. 25,000 by the said manufacturer. According to the CAA there had been a piece of a mosquito coil inside a bottle of soft drink distributed by one of the reputed beverage companies. When the consumer complained action was taken and the bottle was sent to the Government Analyst who confirmed that there was a piece of a mosquito coil. Based on the report the CAA called both parties and the manufacturer agreed to pay Rs. 25,000 as compensation. The CAA has also initiated a special raid scheme to nab traders who sell goods at high prices during festive seasons. Under this scheme, special raids were conducted in Kataragama and Tissamaharama during the Esala festival and forty traders produced before court were fined Rs. 123,000, said Chairman CAA. He said that during raids in Kataragama, Sella Kataragama and Wedihitikanda CAA was able to nab 31 traders while 12 traders were nabbed in Tissamaharama and Debarawewa. The offences they committed included selling goods at high prices, selling food and goods of low quality, non-display of goods lists, non-mentioning of prices, breaking rules on labelling and display of goods and hoarding the goods and not selling them. The CAA has filed action against the traders as they have broken the rules laid down by the CAA, said a spokesman of the Central Information and Media Unit of the Information Department. |
