Government issues ultimatum to donor organisations by Thava Sajitharan The Government has decided to issue an ultimatum to donors who have signed memorandums of understanding with the Government to reconstruct damaged houses in the tsunami-affected areas but have not still begun the work. Cabinet's spokesperson and Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva addressing a media briefing last Friday on a number of decisions taken at the last Cabinet meeting made this announcement. "It was noted during the last Cabinet meeting that several donors had not started the construction though the land had been allocated", he said. "We are going to summon all such organisations and give them an ultimatum to commence the process. If they fail to do so, we will then cancel the MoUs with those organisations", Minister Silva said. According to the Minister, District Committees have already been empowered to carry out the work. Funds will be channelled through those committees for the people to rebuild their houses. |
