Bakeer Markar remembered by Ananda Kannangara The Philatelic Bureau of the Postal Department on Wednesday paid a glowing tribute to a great son of Sri Lanka, the late Speaker Al-Haj M. A. Bakeer Markar by issuing a new postage stamp in the denomination of Rs. 5.00. Post and Telecommunication Minister D. M. Jayaratna was the Chief Guest on the occasion and Speaker of Parliament W. J. M. Lokubandara was the Guest of Honour at the ceremony held at Zahira College Auditorium, Colombo. Speaking on the occasion Minister Jayaratna highly appreciated the invaluable service rendered by the late Speaker towards the people in the country, irrespective of their caste, creed or religion. He represented the Beruwala constituency in Parliament and due to his tireless service for all major communities, the Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims, the late Speaker obtained second highest number of preference votes in the country at the 1977 General Election (Late President R. Premadasa polled the highest number of votes at that election). Speaker W. J. M. Lokubandara highly admired the political life of the late Speaker and said that issuing a stamp in his memory could be regarded as a great deed, considering his outstanding service as the last Speaker in the old Parliament in Galle Face and as the first Speaker of the new Parliament at Sri Jayawardenapura, Kotte. |
