$ 32 million Tokyo grant to boost tourism by Elmo Leonard Tokyo is likely to grant $32 million to Sri Lanka to improve the tourism industry in Anuradhapura, Nuwara Eliya, Sigiriya, Kandy and Negombo under a TRIP - Tourism Resources Improvement Project. The project will also have a component to promote Sri Lanka in Japan. The final negotiations between the government of Japan and the Sri Lanka Ministry of Tourism is likely to end shortly, with the signing of the agreement. The first phase of the project will begin in 2006 and end in 2008. Secretary to the Ministry, Dr. Prathap Ramanujam said. The ancient city of Anuradhapura's Sri Maha Bodhi, which is a sapling of the Bo or Banyan species of tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment is to get a facelift. The infrastructure of Anuradhapura will come under attention to promote local and foreign tourism. The hillocked Nuwara Eliya's Lake Gregory where angling and boating are attractions will be made environmental friendly. The concept of cleanliness is to be extended around the metropolis to improve its appeal to tourists. The access roads to the ancient rock citadel in Sigiriya will be widened and made more environmental friendly. Kandy will have a purpose built hotel school. The Hamilton or Dutch Canal which runs through Negombo, the hub of fishing activity in the west of the island will be dredged and made environmental friendly. A fish landing site will also be built to lure tourists. |
