DaimlerChrysler in tsunami relief effort DaimlerChrysler Corporation, USA, recently donated two Chrysler Grand Voyager vehicles, each having a market value of Rs. 7.1 million, to assist in the tsunami reconstruction effort. The presentation was made to President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga by Gahanath Pandithage, Director, DIMO-Diesel and Motor Engineering Company Ltd., authorised distributor for the brand. The recipient of these two, MPVs (seven passengers including driver) is the Task Force for Rebuilding the Nation - TAFREN. The facilitating, coordinating and monitoring body was set up by the President following the tsunami. TAFREN's key objective is to ensure that the quantum of international aid gets distilled down to the affected people in a free and fair manner. At the same time they maintain transparency in all the activities, across the many economic sectors, while working closely with the relevant line ministries, allied agencies, non-governmental organisations and civil societies. Speaking of the donation, a spokesperson for TAFREN said, 'Even at the best of times, some of these tsunami affected areas are the least accessible and we are happy today to have been able to receive these Chrysler Grand Voyagers from DaimlerChrysler, USA through their local distributor DIMO'. |
