On the Assassination and its aftermath From the Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has expressed shock over the assassination of the Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. In a statement issued in this regard the TNA has disapproved the murder and extended deep condolence to the wife and relatives of the Minister. "Killing of Kadirgamar has taken place in an important period where composure is sought. Murders in the last several months have been affecting the ceasefire in a very adverse manner. We insist that the peace talks should be resumed in a meaningful way" the statement asserted. Sudar Oli (SOI) - 15/08/05) The fast to death protest demanding the abandonment of the Upper-Kotmale project carried out by some 6 youth in the up-country has been temporarily called off. This decision was taken considering the present situation after a State of Emergency was declared and the assurance given by the Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha to hold discussions on the issue. (SOI - 15/08/05) 'Sarvadesa Thamileela Maanavar Peravai (International Thamileelam Students Union) said Army forces were trying to attack their office in Jaffna yesterday. It has complained to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission about this. (Thinakural (TK) - 16/08/05) The TNA has said that the Prime Minister of the country superficially accusing the LTTE is regrettable and condemnable. TNA parliamentarians made this observation when asked about PM's speeches made at the funeral of the late Foreign Minister and in the meeting of the all parties' leaders directly accusing the LTTE in connection with the murder and calling them terrorist. (Virakesari (VK) - 17/08/05) An organization called 'Aikiya Ullangal Inayam (United Hearts Union) has written a letter to the Mayor of Hatton-Dikkoya requesting to take necessary action to erect a statue of the Late Soumyamoorthi Thondaman in the city. (VK - 17/08/05) The LTTE has notified that their member of the political wing Gopi had been abducted by the forces when he was visiting his parents in Jaffna yesterday and if he was not released they would be compelled to take stern action. They have also expressed their strong condemnation to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. (TK - 18/08/05) "All the activities and movements of the LTTE will be in accordance with the Cease Fire Agreement. If the State of Emergency would be an obstacle then cease fire atmosphere would become questionable", said the LTTE political leader S.P. Thamilchelvan. He insisted on this matter when he met with the Head of the SLMM. (SOI - 19/08/05) "If the Sinhala society were to know about the culture and livelihood of the Muslims living in this country they could get to know them only through Sinhala books and Sinhala programs. Therefore Muslims should be keen in such endeavour", said Minister Ferial Ashraff in the launching of the collections of Islamic-Sinhala short stories written by retired teacher Oseela Abdeen. (SOI - 19/08/05) TNA MP Josaph Pararasasingham said "President's call for direct talks with the LTTE is a delayed action.
