From the Tamil Press by Thava Sajitharan

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has expressed shock over the assassination of the Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. In a statement issued in this regard the TNA has disapproved the murder and extended deep condolence to the wife and relatives of the Minister.

We insist that the peace talks should be resumed in a meaningful way" the statement asserted. Sudar Oli (SOI) - 15/08/05)

The fast to death protest demanding the abandonment of the Upper-Kotmale project carried out by some 6 youth in the up-country has been temporarily called off. The LTTE has notified that their member of the political wing Gopi had been abducted by the forces when he was visiting his parents in Jaffna yesterday and if he was not released they would be compelled to take stern action. They have also expressed their strong condemnation to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission. (TK - 18/08/05)

"All the activities and movements of the LTTE will be in accordance with the Cease Fire Agreement. If the State of Emergency would be an obstacle then cease fire atmosphere would become questionable", said the LTTE political leader S.P. Thamilchelvan. He insisted on this matter when he met with the Head of the SLMM. (SOI - 19/08/05)

"If the Sinhala society were to know about the culture and livelihood of the Muslims living in this country they could get to know them only through Sinhala books and Sinhala programs. Therefore Muslims should be keen in such endeavour", said Minister Ferial Ashraff in the launching of the collections of Islamic-Sinhala short stories written by retired teacher Oseela Abdeen. (SOI - 19/08/05)

TNA MP Josaph Pararasasingham said "President's call for direct talks with the LTTE is a delayed action. However if the President would be willing to resume the talks it should be welcome." (VK - 20/08/05)

"Even though the declared State of Emergency is meant for the whole country, innocent Tamils in the Colombo district are the most suffering ones" lamented MP and leader of the Western Peoples Front Mano Ganesan when asked why he opposed the declaration. (VK - 20/08/05)
