Kaleidoscope :

The overloaded brain

by Rohan Jayawardane

Is the process of life in these times stressful and sans the treasured moments of calm and reflectivity which were available every day up to 30 years ago? Actually, the balance in one's life is restored by the insights and fresh decisions taken on every such occasion of personal introspection. "Introspection" is defined in dictionary terms as "Observing the process of one's own mind".

In other words, the individual looks into the interior in the manner of being an observer, dispassionately. The process is silent and conducted alone. If daily effected, the habit would lead into a stream of improved daily decisions and considerable alleviation of the stress-level upon the personal psyche.

This stress-level has been the accumulated 'presence' of a whole lot of indecisive moments and confusing events, as well as a tiredness increasingly experienced within the nervous system. This new event of the introspection however erases the backlog at the back of the head and frees the Brain Funciton into a regular state of clarity and daily preparedness. Therefore all future decisions thereafter would have this clarity of mind working together with the personal knowledgeability and criteria of life-experience.

Why is it necessary today to think in these terms, at odds with the values and the methods of these times? It might be more than likely nowadays that a person is deemed to be "ill" if found to be alone and thoughtful! 'It is a state of depression" would be one interesting diagnosis and the medical experts consulted thereafter.

The need for introspection is already stated, as being a means of alleviating stress and of refining the Brain's output. The modern picture of community life is the finest evidence of the awful decline of the human person in terms of personal contentment within a flux of massive expectation and commitments that invariably exceed the singular capacity to handle at a controlled and qualitative level.

The apparent disappointments and failures are observed emotionally as the "hurdles" that must somehow be cleared without any conscious perceptions of the loss of nervous control, of emotional control and the decline into a state of reduced physical health. Another factor is a rise of irritability because of the pre-occupations, with repercussions.

The major events which startle the modern organised society of today, deemed to be superior in its efficiency and provisions, are actually outrageous. They manifest a complete disregard for the cherished notion that each person's life is precious in the same manner that one's own life is deemed to be precious!.

Abuse of the concept of personal dignity earns a response in the same fashion, and then many a "war" is begun.

Finally, the entire society of the human persons are thus indulgent with a departure of all morality. The quality of perception and activity erodes.

The less influential and well-placed citizens usually are initially the worst losers, but the actual hideous truth lies in the general acceptance of a self-destructive lifestyle. It has finally affected everyone at the helm, in particular, in the socio-economic-religious application.

Therefore if this contention is deemed to be correct, the answer lies less with preaching and the lectures that miss the fundamental source, and altogether with a general revision of the personal style. The chinese sages called this the individual "Path" replete with regular transfers into interesting changes in mind-focus, bearing out the contention that 'Variety is the Spice of Life.

On the other hand, scientists will state that the Brain thrives and grows on "Variety", but tires and stutters in due course on the sameness of things. In translation the message is that there ought to be made available through personal initiative a discovery of at least one perfectly natural talent or method of self-expression that takes away from the routine that gives daily stress and automatic function.

The quiet adjustment of routine would be rewarding and give higher mental health. In due course, there could be some fine new expertise too. It is worthwhile that there be this shift into individual enhancement of varied sorts which shall provide the young persons too a better look at the finely integrated adult person.
