Vavuniya express mows down motorist by Jayampathy Jayasinghe and Kapila Somaratne One person died and another was seriously injured when the Vavuniya bound express train from Matara collided with a luxury jeep at an unprotected level crossing at St. Patrick's place, Molligoda, Wadduwa, around 11.a.m. on Saturday. The dead person has been identified as one Palitha Edirisinghe a relative of EAP Group Chairperson Mrs Soma Edirisighe. The injured person is Mr. Sharma, the General Manager of the Ceylon Continental Colombo. Mr. Sharma who was in a serious condition was rushed to the National Hospital Colombo in a private vehicle. It was subsequently learnt that both of them were travelling in the jeep and were on their way to the Villa Oceanic Hotel, Wadduwa. However, Ceylon Continental spokesmen said that Mr. Sharmas condition was improving. More than 16 people have been killed at this unprotected level crossing during the past few years. All victims have been mowed down by speeding trains. In fact the Panadura Provincial Council member Amrad Majeed has brought to the notice of the Railway authorities and the minister concerned to erect a railway gate but no action has been taken so far. Around 500-600 people including tourists visit the luxurious Villa Oceanic hotel daily. OIC Wadduwa Inspector Lalith Abeysekera is investigating the accident. |
