ICT to assist tsunami affected

by Ambalangoda special corr.

An islandwide educational program has been launched with the aim of providing training on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the tsunami-affected school leavers. The first seminar - 'ICT for Life' organised by the Cey-Nor Foundation and the Worldview International was held recently at Trincomalee Kachcheri with the participation of over 150 school leavers and students of all three communities. The second seminar was also held last weekend with the participation of nearly 100 youth at the Ambagahapitiya Temple auditorium, Balapitiya.

Making the keynote address on the inauguration of the ICT program at Trincomalee, Worldview General Secretary Arne Fjortoft said that he was highly pleased to observe the young members of all three communities of Trincomalee district were gathered together in a very friendly manner to learn on Information and Communication Technology.

It was globally recognised as the most important subject and knowledge of ICT was an indispensable tool for one's existence and to encounter the day-to-day complex challenges of the modern world successfully, he said.

Education Ministry ICT Consultant, Dilanthe Withanage stressing on the importance of the knowledge of both English and ICT, said that in a world of which all the countries were exposed to speedy globalisation, future generations devoid of the knowledge of English and ICT could not survive.

Millions of Websites were available in English on every subject and only those who possessed a knowledge of English could have access to these websites he said.

If speedy action is taken to bridge the digital gap by expanding the ICT education to reach each and every child of the country, frustration and youth unrest could be minimised, he said.

Modern issues of the country could never be solved by demonstrations triggered by communalism and racism of war mongers but only by bridging the digital gap, he further said.
