More families of Bindunuwewa victims compensated

The Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction paid compensation of Rs. 200,000 each to the families of eight Bindunuwewa massacred victims on August 9, 2005 at the Ministry premises.

Out of the 26 inmates in Bindunuwewa Rehabilitation Center who were killed on October 26, 2000, only eighteen persons were identified and compensation was paid by the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Authority (RRAN) and the Rehabilitation of Persons, Property and Industries Authority (REPIA).

However, eight bodies, which were badly burnt and mutilated were beyond recognition and as a result death certificates were not issued.

This issue was taken up by the Ministry of Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconciliation and the Ministry of Infrastructure Development in the Eastern Province and approval was obtained from the Cabinet to pay compensation to these families.
