CUGA stern on permanent jobs for graduates The strong Combined Unemployed Graduates' Association (CUGA) on Friday demanded that the Government should provide the remaining 30,000 unemployed graduates with letters, confirming permanency in their jobs at public sector institutions before August 31 as promised by Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama and Deputy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. The CUGA said that only 10,000 graduates have so far been granted permanent jobs under this scheme so far. In an interview with the Sunday Observer CUGA Convener Chandana Sooriyaarachchi said that non focusing any attention by the respective Finance Ministry higher officials in this regard would lead them to take legal action. Asked whether legal action could be taken in respect of such matters, the CUGA Convener said that this was a case of breach of trust made by the Government. "This was a very serious case that all 42,000 registered graduates were summoned to the Sugathadasa Stadium by the Government in November last year to make such a pledge and on that ground we will be compelled to take legal action against the respective officials," he said. At a recent demonstration, held opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station, Sooriyaarachchi also announced their strong membership that their association would not give up their task until all graduates are granted a permanent job. However Sooriyaaratchchi thanked the Government for launching such a scheme, but said that many of their members gave up private sector jobs in order to get themselves registered with Government jobs. Meanwhile, a senior official attached to the Management Service Department (MSD) of the Ministry of Finance denied some statements made by the CUGA Convener and said that more than 10,000 graduates have already been granted permanent jobs under this scheme. When contacted, Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya told the Sunday Observer that the Government's firm stand on permanent jobs for the graduates will not be changed and those who have not obtained letters of appointments would be granted with permanent jobs immediately through the Public Service Commission.
