More schols for expat's children by Ananda Kannangara A record 1762 school children of Sri Lankan registered expatriate workers, will be awarded scholarships by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) at a glittering ceremony scheduled to be held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium today (Sunday 21), Commencing at 10.30 am. Urban Development and Higher Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardana and Ports and Civil Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera will participate at the ceremony on the invitation of Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratne. Scholarships to the value of Rs. 30.4 million will be distributed among children at the ceremony.According to a senior Bureau spokesman, 508 children who obtained highest marks at the year five scholarship examination in August last year will receive certificates along with a cash prizes of Rs. 15,000 each. Meanwhile 1057 children who passed the GCE (OL) will receive Rs. 20,000 each, while 197 children, passed the Advanced Level examination and qualified for universities and technical colleges will receive Rs. 30,000 each. The Bureau statistics also reveals that 11933 children of registered Lankan migrant workers have so far been awarded with scholarships by the SLBFE from the commencement of the program in 1996. |
