Laws to control fragmentation of coconut lands

Kurunegala North Group Corr.

Measures had been taken to create an agricultural renaissance through coconut plantation, accordingly legislation had been enacted to control the fragmentation of coconut lands.

In addition, coconut subsidy scheme is reintroduced so that all coconut lands above half an acre will get subsidies for contour drains under cultivation and subsidiary crops, said Plantation Industries Minister Anura Priyadarshana Yapa addressing at a workshop on the promotion of coir-based finished products held at Raddalana Temple organised by the Coconut Development Authority Kurunegala recently.

The Minister also observed that the people would demand infrastructure facilities such as electricity, telephone and good road networks for their villages.

They need money to enjoy such facilities, so the responsibility of the government is to introduce new strategies to increase their income.

Under this program of producing coir-based finished products unemployment problem of the rural youth of NWP could also be solved to a certain extent stated the Minister. He said these youths are trained in the trade and those trainees will be given twine twisting machines, necessary fibre and other necessary equipments free of charge at the first stage in order to encourage them.

The Chief Incumbant of the Raddalana Viharaya Ven. Bibiladeniya Dhammapriya Thera and Chairman CDA Percy Wadugedara, also spoke.
