Trinity's unbeaten run ends

by Ranjan Anandappa

Backed by a highly vocal and enthusiastic crowd in familiar surroundings Isipathana ended Trinity's unbeaten run with a 6 points (2 penalties) to 5 (A try) win in an absorbing school rugger match played at Havelock Park yesterday.

The match was played at a ferocious speed dominated by the three quarters of either side. Trinity looked the better side but they proved that even the better side could lose if they make mistakes. Trinity's playmaker and link man Suranga Pushpakumara was no doubt a marked man although he managed to produce his brilliance whenever he took the ball.

His failing to make a conversion after Sanjeeva's try and a missed penalty within kicking range in the second half which went scoreless made the difference between victory and defeat for his side. Trinity scored their first try off a three quarter move when winger Niroshan Sanjeeva gave the finishing touches.

Pushapakumara failed to give them the extra points. Earlier Isipathana's Full back Mohammed Riza had put over a penalty and the score stood in Trinity's favour 5\3.

Isipathana led 6-5 at the breather after Riza put over the second penalty just before lemons. On resumption both sides played exceptionally well trying to forge ahead but neither Isipathana nor Trinity were able to make much headway as both indulged themselves in mistakes. Trinity in particular dropped the ball or knocked on at vital stages, while Isipathana's tight defence deprived the free movement of the Trinity back division which looked dangerous whenever they were on the move.

Trinity won the under 17 game 17-13.
