Havies in another good win

by Lal Gunesekera

The rejuvenated Havelocks outfit scored a fine 24 points (2 goals, 2 tries) to 11 (1 try, 2 penalties) win over Army after leading 12-3 at half time in their second-round Caltex League Rugby Championship game at Galle Face yesterday.

Havies scored a good win over CH too last week, and looks as if they will give a good account of themselves in the forthcoming Clifford Cup tournament. They would have won by a bigger margin last evening, but it was not to be due to poor ball handling and positional play.

The normally reliable place-kicker of Army. T. A. Silva, was completely off colour fluffing two simple penalties - one in each session, but they went ahead in the 10th minute through a 22-metre penalty left by Kapila Knowlton.

Eight minutes later, Havies, took the lead with prop Hassan going over from a five-metre short-tap left flank, but Thajudeen missed the conversion (Havies 7-3).

Five minutes later, right winger Thajudeen scored for Havelocks but Prasad Perera failed with the conversion. (Havies 12-3) and just before the short whistle, Thajudeen missed a near 40-metre penalty for Havelocks.

After the turn around, Army's prop Kotalawala barged over off a move with Havies full-back Saliya Kumara fumbled with the high ball. T. A. Silva missed the conversion (Army 8-12).

This was in the second minute. Six minutes later, Thajudeen, missed a 25-metre penalty for Havelocks, but in the 20th minute the Havies went further ahead with full-back Saliya Kumara going over and Thajudeen adding the extra points (Havies 19-8).

Knowlton put over a 30 metre penalty for Army in the 28th minute (Army 11-19), but Havies put the issue beyond doubt in the 35th minute through a try by left winger Badurdeen originating from a scrum inches from Army's line on right flank after Thajudeen knocked-on in the process of touching down. Saliya Kumara missed the conversion this time (Havies 24-11).

Today, besides the key Kandy Sports Club vs CR & FC game at Nittawela, CH & FC play hosts to Navy at Maitland Crescent in the Cup category.
