23,000 Competitors at All-Island School Games by Leslie Fernando The All-Island School Games 2005 conducted by the Ministry of Education has attracted a record number of 23,000 competitors both boys and girls. A senior official of the Sports Development Department of the Ministry of Education said that the Games will be worked off in three stages. The participants who have performed well at zonal, district and provincial level will vie for major honours. Altogether 23 disciplines have been included at the Games. The first stage with 11 disciplines on the card-netball, basketball, elle, chess, boxing, physical exercises, bodybuilding contest, swimming, soccer, tennis and judo will be held from September 3 to 5 at 17 different venues in Colombo. The second stage also with 11 disciplines-volleyball, table tennis, hockey, badminton, softball cricket, karate, wrestling, gymnastic, carrom, kabaddi and cycling will be worked off from September 10 to 12 at 15 venues in Colombo. Athletics, the main discipline of the games will be held at the final and third stage and will be at the Sugathadasa Stadium on September 29 and 30 and October 1 and 2. All usual events will be held: Boys and girls under-12, under-14, under-16, under-18 and under-20, at the athletic meet. The most outstanding athlete will be selected in all five age categories in both boys and girls. The Ministry of Education has made arrangements to hold the distribution of awards at the conclusion of the athletic meet on October 2 at the Sugathadasa Stadium. |
