Five for World Masters

A five member masters athletes along with the President of Sri Lanka Masters Athletics, P. H. D. Waidyatilaka (chief-de-mission) left yesterday for San Sebastian in Spain to participate in the 16th World Masters Athletics Championships to be staged from Aug. 22 to Sep. 3.

K. M. Karunaratne (age group mens 65 years) is the team manager and will compete in 100, 200 metres and 300 metres hurdles events.

He is the national champion in these events. At the Asian Championships held in Bangkok in December 2004 Karunaratne won a gold in the 4 x 400 metres relay, a silver in 400 metres and bronze in 200 metres. Gamini Weerasinghe (50 years), the team captain will participate in the 100, 400 metres hurdles and high jump.

Weerasinghe won the 400 metres hurdles and high jump in his age group at the Asian Masters Championships held in Dalian, China in 2002. He did not compete in the 2004 games due to illness.

Neel Wickremarachchi (50 years) will run in the 400 and 800 metres. He won gold in the 400 metres at the 2002 and 2004 Asian masters Games. P. M. W. Ranasinghe (45) is the national champion in the 800 and 1500 metres. He is taking part in both these events. At the 2002 and 2004 games he won both 800 metres events. W. Sellahewa (45 years) will participate in the 400 metres and 400 metres hurdles. He won the 400 metres event in 2004 games along with a gold in the 4 x 400 metres relay.

Waidyatilaka in addition to being the chief-de-mission of the Sri Lanka team has been invited as one of the two International Technical Officers (ITO) to officiate at the championships. Waidyatilaka stated that unlike in the case of IAAF conducted meets where between 8 to 10 ITO's are assigned to cover the championships which has around 1800 athletes in the World Masters Athletic Championships.

There are over 7,500 participants and the meet is conducted at three venues and it's really a gigantic task for just two ITO's to cover such a big championships.

Waidyatilaka will be representing Sri Lanka at the World Congress which will be held during the championships and the Stadia Committee meetings where he is a member of the world body. As Chairman, Technical Committee of the Asian Masters, Waidyatilaka will also be attending the regional meeting of Asia.
