Paint Ball Game - a new sport for Sri Lanka

by Ranjan Anandappa

Paint Ball Game, a totally new sport in Sri Lanka was introduced and inaugurated by the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Jeevan Kumaratunga last Friday at Hotel Sirimedura, Dandugama, Ja-Ela.

This sport was founded in the United States in the year 1983 and it quickly spread in the United Kingdom and the European countries the following year. The Paint Ball Game has already staged a World Cup in 1990 in the USA.

Only two Asian countries are indulged in this sport namely Thailand and Malaysia at the moment and the introduction of this sport in Sri Lanka is bound to catch up fast.

The facilities for this sport is available only at the Hotel Sirimedura at Ja-ela at the moment, but the organisers are trying to popularise the game in the other parts of the country in places like Beruwela, Negombo for a start.

A company named Snipe Ride managed by Sanjay Kumaranatunga a nephew of late Vijaya Kumaranatunga are the people who are trying to promote this game which is played between a minimum of six persons per side with a painter (a gun) and a jelly ball a size of a marble inserted into the chamber of the gun. Even a single person could obtain the paint balls and shoot at targets.

There are from 60, 120 and 500 balls depending on the duration of the game. The game lasts from eight to ten minutes and resembles a mini battle field where the players of either side ambush and shoot the paint ball targeting a player. Once the jelly hits the target (a player) it bursts and the paint smears on the body of the player.

The side that has more paint marks on their body are the losers.

There are certain demarcations with flags where they have to capture the flags which points will be also awarded for doing so. There is a special attire for the sport to cover the entire body with helmets to protect the heads. Two referees are also in attendance.

However, the public will come to know more about this in the near future once it's popularised more among the people.
