Huge quantities of heroin seized by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Mannar has become a haven for heroin smugglers with huge quantities of heroine being smuggled from India across the Palk Strait after cessation of hostilities between the security forces and LTTE,a senior Police officer told the Sunday Observer. Headquarters Inspector of Police Mannar (HQI) Inspector Sudath Asmadala said they had seized 11 kilos of heroin with a street value of Rs. 385 million last month alone. Meanwhile a huge heroine smuggling operation was busted last Thursday around 3 p.m. when the Sri Lanka Navy intercepted a boat in the mid sea and found 11.550 kilos of heroin (Brown Sugar variety) worth around Rs. 420 million. Following the detection two Indian nationals in the boat were taken in for questioning by the Navy. According to Inspector Asmadala, The Naval Dora patrol boat on sighting the suspected boat near Katchativu islands gave chase but had lost sight of it. However they spotted the same boat again in the mid sea, off the Pesalai shore. Director Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) SSP Ananda Hettiarachchi, said two PNB police teams have been despatched to Mannar for further investigations. |
