Job fair for the differently abled

by Ranga Chandraratne

A Job Fair involving employees and disabled job seekers will be held on October 31, 2005 at the Colombo Plaza. It is being organised by the Employer's Network on Disability established by the Employee Federation of Ceylon, in collaboration with Motivation Charitable Trust (UK), an organisation focusing on disability issues, which has teamed up with the EFC in various programmes providing financial and technical support.

The current job fair is funded by the Competitiveness Programme which is a USAID sponsored technical assistance programme and the Colombo Plaza Hotel have come forward once again in support of this initiative. "We believe in a more inclusive society where there are marginalised groups which are left out of the mainstream of economic life of the country", said the Director General of the Employers' Federation of Ceylon (EFC), Gotabaya Dassanayake at the press briefing held at Colombo Plaza recently to launch the Job Fair for People with Disabilities.

He said that as the main employee constituent of the ILO (International Labour Organization) in Sri Lanka, EFC respects the ILO convention and non-discriminatory employment practices. He further said that EFC also looked at the possibilities of tapping the vast pool of talents among the disabled for the benefit of the Private Sector and also to assist them.

This year the organizers will bring over 100 candidates to the Job Fair who have gone through preliminary training in job seeking skills conducted by Motivation Charitable Trust under their Employment Placement Programme. The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Social Welfare has extended their support to this programme.

The Network views this as an ideal opportunity for private sector enterprises to assist in building a more inclusive society.

Minister of Women's Affairs Empowerment and Social Welfare Sumedha G. Jayasena, will be the Chief Guest at the fair.

Any employers who wish to participate in future Job Fair could contact EFC on 2867966/69 or the Employment Placement Manager of Motivation Charitable Trust on 5376230-3 or email-mail to: epp@motivationlk.org epp@motivationlk.org.
