Using satellite technology for disaster management

by L. B. Wijayasiri in Kandy

Geo-Informatic Society of Sri Lanka of the Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture University of Peradeniya has forwarded a project report to Scientific Affairs Minister Professor Tissa Vitharana for the establishment of a Remote Sensing Technology Centre with the view to utilise Satellite Technology for disaster management.

This was disclosed by President of the Geo-Informatics Society of Sri Lanka Dr. Ranjith Premalal de Silva at a briefing to the media held at the PGIA, Peradeniya University. Associated with him were coordinator Ruwan Kanchana Silva and Dr. (Mrs) Dhammika Dayawansa the Editor.

According to Dr. Premalal de Silva remote sensing is the Science of obtaining information about the object area or phenomenon or the earth space without having physical contacts with them.

This project proposal has now been referred to the National Organisation of Disaster Management on the request of the Minister.

Dr. Premalal de Silva was of the view that this would cost US Dollars 10 million for initial expenses and they do not expect the government to make any financial contributions.

But this could be obtained from donor countries out of their allocations for Tsunami Disaster rehabilitation works. Large sums of funds promised by those countries have been held up for want of project reports, so that this project would be acceptable to them.

Coordinator Ruwan Kanchana Silva and The Editor Dr. (Mrs.) N. D. K. Dayawansa also made their contributions to the discussions.
