IT scholarships for schoolchildren by Ananda Kannangara Education Minister Susil Premajayantha on Thursday warned schoolchildren in the country to exercise caution over political debates, aired over television channels as they could disturb the minds of the younger generation. He said focus on heated arguments on television channels by students may be a waste of valuable time. "They could allocate such time for educational activities," he stressed. The Minister made these observations at a scholarship awarding ceremony, conducted by the Foundation of IT Professional of Sri Lanka (FITP) at the BMICH. 190 schoolchildren and school leavers received certificates on completion of professional courses in Information Technology. Minister Premajayantha thanked the FITP for granting scholarships to schoolchildren to improve their IT skills and noted the Government has accepted the challenge to set up 2000 computer science laboratories countrywide covering rural schools under Asian Development Bank aid. The program will commence shortly. Referring to a particular two-hour television program that telecast four local and foreign movies continuously, Minister Premajayantha said that it was a crime for younger generation to watch such movies for long durations as it affects time for study. President, FITP, Thusitha Perera said that in addition to IT scholarship courses, conducted by their institution for the benefit of schoolchildren, they have already commenced computer courses to personnel in the Sri Lanka Army and their kith and kin. |
