News in brief Tribute to war widows on IWD Ranaviru Family Counselling Service (RFCS) jointly with the Touchwood Investments Limited will pay tribute to the wives of war heroes on March 8 to mark the International Womens Day at 9.30 am at the Sasakawa Hall Colombo 03.Ten war widows representing Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police will be presented with Touchwood certificates symbolizing all the war 'widows on this day. Sita passes away Mrs. Sita Arunthavanathan, the well-known radio broadcaster on Buddhism passed away after a brief illness. A Buddhist scholar, she also participated in discussions on TV. A one-time Secretary of the Sri Lanka Federation of University obtain Women, she was among the first batch of undergraduates to obtain their degrees from the Peradeniya University. She held the post of Secretary of the International Buddhist Centre Dayaka Sabha and was a council member of the Women's Congress. Her funeral will take place on Monday, at the Kohuwela cemetery at 11.30 am. Massage parlour or brothel? Eight women were rounded up from a brothel operating under the guise of a massage parlour at Sagara Road, Bambalapitiya following a raid by the Central Anti-Vice Striking Force (CAVSF) last Friday. The manager of the brothel too had been taken in for questioning, police said. The CAVSF had raided the same brothel last month after obtaining a search warrant from the Colombo South Magistrate. It was revealed that a sum of Rs. 1000 upwards was charged from clients patronising the brothel. Meanwhile, in a separate raid nine women were taken into custody from a brothel at Galle Road Bambalapitiya. A sum of Rs 1000-6000 is being charged from clients, police said. The women found in these brothels were handed over to the Wellawatte police for further investigations. The series of raids on brothels in Colombo were conducted by the CAVSF on the directions of DIG, A. Fonseka, Supdt. of Police Jayantha Perera and ASP V. Ranaweera. Annual transfers postponed till April 4 The annual transfers of nearly 30,000 public servants of executive and lower grades have been postponed by the Ministry of Public Administration on a directive by the Elections Commissioner. According to a Ministry circular, all annual transfers will come into effect from April 01 this year. The directive was made in order to conduct the forthcoming Local
Government Election with the assistance of a large number of public
servants, whose names have already been enlisted on assigned election duty. |
