NPC to launch recruitment drive in Eastern Province

The National Police Commission (NPC) on the recommendation of the IGP will launch a recruitment drive in the Eastern Province to recruit 200 Tamil speaking police constables to be posted to the liberated areas in the Eastern Province. The recruitment is expected to begin within the next two weeks as several new police stations are to be opened in the Eastern province.

At present there is a dearth of Tamil-speaking policemen in these areas. Tamil-speaking persons from their home stations will be recruited as police constables to serve in the Eastern Province.

The NPC in consultation with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Victor Perera, has decided to grant field promotions to thirty Chief Inspectors of Police, as Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) to be posted to the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

The newly appointed ASPs will relieve senior ASP's who have completed their period of engagement in operational areas, a spokesman for the NPC told the Sunday Observer.

The NPC on the recommendation of the IGP has promoted 30 senior Chief Inspectors of Police (CIs) with an unblemished service to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) to be posted to operational areas of the North-East.

The spokesman for the NPC said that a number of ASPs who have served in operational areas are unable to get back to their respective stations or to other stations owing to dearth of gazetted officers. As a result several ASPs are compelled to work for longer periods in operational areas than what was required.

According to the NPC the field promotions will be effective while an officer serves in an operational area. But he will be reverted to his substantive rank when posted outside an operational area.

The officers will not be entitled to additional remuneration other than payments approved in operational areas. However, the officers will not be able to claim permanency in their appointment.

They will also not be able to anti-date promotions to claim seniority after being absorbed into the permanent cadre. The officers will remain in the seniority list of the Chief Inspectors' cadre and may stand a better chance when being absorbed to the permanent cadre.

The NPC has decided to grant field promotions to the following Chief Inspectors of Police:

G.K.J. Aponsu, A.S. Selvam, D.P.B.Dissanayake, C.J.de Silva, J.M.P. Jayalath, J.L. Barthlot, G.A.L. Ranasinghe, P.A.S de Silva, K.J.P Perera, R.A. Karunaratne, B.N.R. Senasinghe, T.D.L.R. Assen, O.W.
