PM for World Islamic Economic Forum

Health Ministry in emergency plan for flood victims

An emergency plan to assist flood victims facing health challenges due to the prevailing weather is now under way in 84 districts, Director General of Health Services, Dr P.G. Maheepala told the media at a special conference at the Health Education Bureau to address issues such as food safety, sanitation and accident prevention during the Vesak season.

 

Jayanthi conquers Mt. Everest

Jayanthi Kuru-Utumpala became the first Sri Lankan to climb Mount Everest. She left Camp 4 around 9 pm the previous day, with climbing partner, Johann Peries. She continued with her Sherpa to the Death Zone, the region above 26,000ft where climbing is extremely difficult.

 

Police come down hard on looters in flood-hit areas

Police apprehended 15 persons from various flood-affected areas in the country for suspected looting and stealing valuables from houses evacuated by victims of the recent floods.

 

National Vesak Festival 2016

The National Vesak Festival 2016, will be held at the Naigala Raja Maha Vihara, Hambantota district from May 19 to 26.Among the important events are ordaining 25 children at the Kasagala Raja Maha Vihara, workshop on novices and offering robes, display of Vesak lanterns in police stations, cultural display by the Police, Army, Air Force and the National Youth Services Council, Bodhi poojas, Bhakthi Gee, exposition of relics and holding dansalas.

 

Met Dept issues bad weather warning

The Meteorology Department issued a bad weather warning yesterday that the atmospheric disturbance in the South East of Sri Lanka is likely to intensify and develop into a depression and move closer to Sri Lanka, affecting the weather in the country and the surrounding sea areas.

President tells police: Raid illegal sand mining

President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed a special police team to be deployed directly under the IGP to raid illegal mining across the country which harms the environment.
