148th Police Day tomorrow

The 148th Police Day will be celebrated tomorrow September 03, the Police Headquarters announced today. A series of programs had been organised in Police Headquarters as well as Police Field Force Headquarters in Bambalapitiya in this regard.

 

Elderly man self immolates in Kollupitiya

An elderly man set himself on fire opposite the Kollupitiya Police Station this afternoon, the police said. The man who sustained serious injuries was rushed to National Hospital Colombo in a critical condition.

 

14 injured in expressway bus accident

At least 14 passengers sustained injuries when a private bus crashed into a CTB bus parked at the toll gate of the Pinnaduwa exit on Southern Expressway yesterday afternoon, the police said.

 

Two children drown in Mannar

[August 29 2014]

Two children who went to bathe in Vettikulam Tank in Silavathura area last evening drowned, the police said. The victims had been identified as Pushpa Kumari Inoka (13) and eight year old Jegan Roshan Fernando of Arippu West area.

 

Man arrested with Rs.1m worth gold

Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport arrested a local man who tried to smuggle out two slabs of gold worth over Rs.1 million on Friday evening, the Customs sources said.

 

Showery weather to continue - Met

Showery weather will continue further over the South-western parts of the country due to the atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, the Meteorological Department said.

Notorious underworld drug kingpin Nuwan Udaya Gunathilaka alias ‘Kudu Nuwan’ wanted for a number of cases was arrested by the Colombo Crime Division for possessing 300 grams of heroin in Meethotamulla this morning, the Police said.

 

Minister Pavithra hospitalised

Power and Energy Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has been admitted to the Emergency Treatment Unit of Bandarawela Hospital this morning over a sudden illness, Ministerial sources confirmed.

 

Whale washed ashore

[August 16 2014]

A large dead whale washed ashore on Moragalla beach in Aluthgama this morning, the police said. The people in the area first noticed the 25 feet long beast being washed shore in the wee hours. The message was soon spread across the neighbouring areas making residents in great numbers to visit the scene to witness this unusual occurrence.

 

Largest haul of Heroin seized outside Colombo

[August 15 2014]

Police Narcotics Bureau last night seized 59 kilograms of Heroin from a boutique in Wathuwala, Katugastota making it the largest haul made out of Colombo, the police said. The PNB on an information received in March this year continued investigations and arrested a man named Ahmed Sabry Thajudeen from Matale on Thursday.

 

Rangana Herath takes 250th Test wicket

Left arm spinner Rangana Herath became the third Sri Lankan Test bowler to take 250 wickets when he had Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq caught behind on the second day of the second Test match against Pakistan at the SSC grounds, Colombo yesterday.

 

Brothel busted and eight arrested

A brothel house that had been carried out in the guise of a private lodge was raided by the Organised Crime Detection Unit of Maradana Police in Sangaraja Mawatha yesterday, the police said.

 

Youth stabbed to death in Grandpass

[August 14 2014]

An 18-year-old male youth who was stabbed by another youth in De Mel Watta, Grandpass last night succumbed to his injuries, the police said.The victim identified as Mohamed Farhan had been stabbed by a resident in the same neighbourhood aged 24 over a personal dispute.

 

 

The resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons in Mannar region is in progress. Hundreds of families were resettled in their original places after nearly two decades in Musali, Mannar on Friday.
