Gold chain thieves in mobikes remanded

A gang of eight in motor cycles snatching gold chains from women was taken into custody by Wellawa Police. According to Police, the gang had been operating in several villages in the Kurunegala district and had robbed gold chains over Rs. 500,000.

 

GSK pledges $ 8 million

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has pledged US$ 8 million to support scientists researching new medicines to fight malaria and other neglected tropical diseases afflicting poor nations, in a fresh initiative targeted at improving public health in least developed countries (LDCs).

 

North Korea makes denuclearisation pledge

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il pledged to remove nuclear weapons from the peninsula in a meeting with a senior envoy from China, Xinhua news agency reported on Tuesday from Pyongyang.

The Police Department will take stern action against errant police personnel irrespective of their positions who violate Election Laws. The Police Department had taken action against several police personnel who had violated the Election Laws recently.

UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe who says he defends freedom of the press had severely blamed senior journalist of the Lankadeepa newspaper Dayaseeli Liyanage and her editor at an election rally using strong language for writing an independent report exposing the agreement between the TNA and Sarath Fonseka, Mass Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana said yesterday.

 

Remove cutouts, President again tells IGP

Girl dies after falling from bus

A tragic death occurred yesterday near Talagaha junction in Akmeemana when a sixteen year school girl fell off a private bus while she was travelling on the foot-board of the bus. She was on her way to school.
