Minister John Amaratunga assumes duties

Senior UNP Parliamentarian John Amaratunga today assumed duties as the Minister of Public Order, Disaster Management and Christian Affairs. UNP Kautara District Parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma was arrested by the Colombo Crime Division this morning for assaulting a UPFA supporter in Agalawatta two days ago, the police said.

Tremors in Tissa

Minor tremors were reported near Kirinda in Tissamaharama this morning around 9.20, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau officials said. It was detected by the Seismograph Vibration Meter located in the Regional Office in Pallekele and Hakmana and was measured at 2 on the Richter Scale.

 

Rs.100m worth illicit fags seized

Customs Central Intelligence Bureau seized a container carrying a large stock of illicit cigarettes worth over Rs.100 million that has been falsely declared as washing detergent, Customs sources said.

STF finds arms cache, Fonseka’s posters at temple

The Special Task Force personnel recovered 54 hand grenades and two T-56 rifles from a temple in Colombo yesterday. Military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara confirmed that the grenades and assault rifles were recovered from Bodhirajarama Temple in Maligawatte last evening.
