The Government decision to increase the import tax on motor vehicles was aimed at controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the vehicle fleet of the country as excessive number of vehicles have been imported to the country during the past three years, Acting Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today. “We had no other intention behind this move other than controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the road network”, the Minister said.

 

Catholic church caution President on relax existing Abortion Law

The Catholic Church today appealed to the President to halt any amendments leading to relax existing Abortion Law of the country, cautioning that such measures would aggravate the social issue and deprive children of their right to life.

DWLC conducts probe into army shooting on jumbos

The Department of Wildlife and Conservation (DWLC) has launched an investigation why the army shot two wild elephants in Bundala yesterday. According to environmentalists one jumbo was shot in the head and the other sustain similar gun shot injuries.

Two Tamils arrested in Paris over man’s death:

Tiger infighting mounts in Europe

Two pro-LTTE activists were arrested in Paris on Friday following the death of Ramesh Sivarupan who is believed to be a member of the Ruthrakumar faction of the LTTE, according to informed sources. The sources said that Ramesh Sivarupan was kidnapped and taken in a van from his residence in Paris and was found near his house a few days ago with injuries. He succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Paris on Thursday.

Reduction in vehicle import duties, a boost to industry

The local vehicle market received a major boost with the Government reducing the import duty on vehicles by 50 percent. The 15 percent surcharge on all imports was also lifted. This would help reduce prices of new and reconditioned vehicles in the market and it would also have a direct impact on the second hand market.

President to visit India on Tuesday

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will tour India on a four-day official visit on Tuesday, June 8, Foreign Ministry sources said. During his stay the President will hold meetings with the Indian President Prathipa Patil, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi and the Indian opposition leader, Sushma Swaraj.
