The Government decision to increase the import tax on motor vehicles was aimed at controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the vehicle fleet of the country as excessive number of vehicles have been imported to the country during the past three years, Acting Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today. “We had no other intention behind this move other than controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the road network”, the Minister said.

The Department of Wildlife and Conservation (DWLC) has launched an investigation why the army shot two wild elephants in Bundala yesterday. According to environmentalists one jumbo was shot in the head and the other sustain similar gun shot injuries.

The UK still believes that a process led in Sri Lanka is better than one led internationally, said the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Alistair Burt, participating in a debate on the situation in Sri Lanka in the House of Commons yesterday (22).

 

US EPA waive its restriction on Lankan coir mats

In a new boost to Sri Lanka’s geo-textile industry and Sri Lanka’s standing as world’s largest exporter of coir fibre, a top US government agency has cleared the way for Sri Lankan made geo-textiles for two projects.

 

 

The Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Limited or Lake House as it is more popularly known, played a significant role in Sri Lanka’s struggle for independence from the British. Lake House played a similar role in the country’s long battle against LTTE terrorism, inculcating patriotism among the masses and becoming a pillar of strength to the heroic Security Forces personnel who eventually eliminated terrorism over one year ago. Post conflict rehabilitation and reconstruction activities:

Tamil intellectuals, ex-militant sympathisers to assist Govt

A group of nine Tamil intellectuals including former prominent militant sympathisers who had been operating internationally for the militant outfit along with Pathmanathan (Kumaran), the former head of the LTTE’s activities abroad said they would assist in the post conflict rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in the country.

Prices of essential items could drop with Govt intervention- Johnston

The Government should intervene in the import of essential items as prices could be reduced by about 15 percent, said Cooperatives and Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando. The cutoff point of the prices should be decided on by the public sector and it should not continue to be the monopoly of the private sector.

Bhanuka crowned king

Sri Lanka Youth player and star Royal batsman Bhanuka Rajapakse was crowned the Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year at the Mega Awards Show at the BMICH on Monday. Romesh Buddhika of Mahinda College, Galle was the runner-up in the All-Island Category.
