The Government decision to increase the import tax on motor vehicles was aimed at controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the vehicle fleet of the country as excessive number of vehicles have been imported to the country during the past three years, Acting Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today. “We had no other intention behind this move other than controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the road network”, the Minister said.

The Department of Wildlife and Conservation (DWLC) has launched an investigation why the army shot two wild elephants in Bundala yesterday. According to environmentalists one jumbo was shot in the head and the other sustain similar gun shot injuries.

US EPA waive its restriction on Lankan coir mats

In a new boost to Sri Lanka’s geo-textile industry and Sri Lanka’s standing as world’s largest exporter of coir fibre, a top US government agency has cleared the way for Sri Lankan made geo-textiles for two projects.

 

 

Kilinochchi, once dominated by the LTTE, is seeing great progress after it was liberated by the Security Forces early last year during their massive humanitarian operation. Following the resettlement of Kilinochchi residents, the Government has turned its attention to fulfilling the educational needs of children there. Many schools are being renovated and re-opened so that children could pursue their studies uninterrupted in a peaceful climate. CMC goes all out to avert accidents

The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) will instal more Digital Countdown Display Boards and traffic signal lights in a bid to prevent vehicle accidents. According to the City Traffic Police over 10-15 motor accidents are reported often at main junctions in the city even where traffic signal lights are operated.

One in seven Americans live in poverty

NEW YORK - The number of people living in poverty has increased to 14.3 percent of Americans, with the ranks of the working-age poor reaching the highest level since 1965. The Census Bureau said that about 43.6 million people, or 1 in 7, were living in poverty last year. That’s up from 39.8 million, or 13.2 percent, in 2008.
