Four soldiers die under a collapsing earth mound

Four soldiers died after an earth mound collapsed on them at Ambepussa Army Camp this afternoon, the army said. He said another officer who was injured in the incident was hospitalised.

 

Polls conclude with 70% voter turnout

Two children drown in mothers suicide attempt

Suspect of Pinnaduwa child murder drowns

The suspect who was arrested in connection with the killing of an eight-year-old girl in Akmeemana, Galle died after drowning in the Madola while attempting to escape from police custody, the police said.

 

Scotland votes No to independence

Scotland has voted to stay in the United Kingdom after voters decisively rejected independence. With the results in from all 32 council areas, the "No" side polled 2,001,926, votes to 1,617,989 for "Yes".

 

Schools in Uva closed tomorrow

A group of persons along with a child which tried to migrate to Malaysia on forged visas were arrested by the CID officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake on Tuesday.

 

Customs detect illicit cigarettes worth Rs.100m

Customs Revenue Task Force (RTF) today seized a large consignment of illegal cigarettes worth over Rs.100 million attempted to be smuggled into the country, Customs Spokesman Director Leslie Gamini said.

 

Container load of undeclared cosmetics seized

A forty-foot container carrying cosmetic goods, foot-wear and soothers valued at Rs.20 million had been seized by the Customs Preventive Division today, Customs Spokesman Leslie Gamini said.

The President of China and General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Xi Jinping arrived in Sri Lanka today marking the first visit by a Chinese President to the country in 28 years.

 

Chief suspect of child abduction case nabbed

The man who is responsible for the abduction of four-year-old Pamara Keshani Bandara in Ambakolatenna was arrested by the police this afternoon, the police said. The suspect who fled his home after his brother informed the police about the child the former was hiding yesterday evening was at large since then.

 

Pope to celebrate mass in Colombo

His Holiness Pope Francis who is scheduled to visit Sri Lanka in January next year will say a mass at the Galle Face Green and conduct a prayer service at Madhu Shrine.
