Over hundred countries have confirmed participation of their youth delegations to the World Conference on Youth 2014 which will be held in Colombo from May 5 - 10.

The 63-year-old Buddhist monk of Sri Saranankara Viharaya in Elpitiya who had been treated in a critical condition after being hacked by another monk, succumbed to his injuries yesterday, the police said.

 

Police nab 1,631 drunk drivers during Avurudu

The police apprehended 1, 631 drivers who drove under the influence of alcohol during the new year week.The special monitoring operation was conducted countrywide for eleven days starting from 6.00am on April 10th Thursday to 6.00am on Saturday April 20th, the police said.

 

Family of five drown as van plunges into tank

A family of five drowned whilst a nine-year-old boy survived when a van bound for Kataragama on pilgrimage plunged into a tank today early morning.

 

Interpol issues Red Notices against 96 Sri Lankans

International Police based in Leon, France has issued 96 Red Notices against wanted Sri Lankan suspects including 40 LTTE operatives who are currently living abroad evading arrest, the police said.

 

Over thousand drunk drivers nabbed

Maldivian drowns in Ambalangoda sea

A 28-year-old Maldivian male who was bathing in the sea in Ambalangoda has drowned yesterday afternoon. The victim has been identified as Ali Thoha, a tourist who had visited the area.

 

Soldier death is a separate incident military spokesman

The death of a soldier in Vavuniya reported on April 11th is entirely a separate incident from the operation carried out to capture Gopi and the other wanted LTTE terrorists, said Military Spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya.

 

Gopi and two LTTErs killed

Kajeepan Ponniah Selvanayagam alias Kasian alias Gopi and two other LTTE supporters were shot dead during the wee hours of today when they attempted to flee the Army cordon set up to capture them. All three were killed during the confrontation.
