The Government decision to increase the import tax on motor vehicles was aimed at controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the vehicle fleet of the country as excessive number of vehicles have been imported to the country during the past three years, Acting Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today. “We had no other intention behind this move other than controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the road network”, the Minister said.

 

Catholic church caution President on relax existing Abortion Law

DWLC conducts probe into army shooting on jumbos

The Department of Wildlife and Conservation (DWLC) has launched an investigation why the army shot two wild elephants in Bundala yesterday. According to environmentalists one jumbo was shot in the head and the other sustain similar gun shot injuries.

US EPA waive its restriction on Lankan coir mats

In a new boost to Sri Lanka’s geo-textile industry and Sri Lanka’s standing as world’s largest exporter of coir fibre, a top US government agency has cleared the way for Sri Lankan made geo-textiles for two projects.

 

 

Tourism is booming in Sri Lanka with the dawn of peace and the Security Forces which made it possible have focused attention on tourism development in a big way. The Army operates a number of resorts and the Navy conducts whale watching tours and other excursions on the high seas. The Sri Lanka Air Force has joined the fray with yesterday’s opening of “Eagles” Sri Lanka’s fourth 18-hole Golf course at China Bay, Trincomalee. Here Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa tees off after opening the course, while Air Force Commander Air Marshal Harsha Abeywickrama and other senior officers look on.

‘Mere allegations sans any proof’:

India dismisses claims of Lankan Navy attacks on fishermen

The Indian Government has dismissed claims of recent attacks on Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy as mere allegations sans any proof. Director, BSM (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and the Maldives) Division, Ministry of External Affairs of India, Deepak Mittal made the submission in a counter affidavit filed in reply to a couple of Contempt of Court applications filed in the Madras High Court Bench,

Ex LTTE cadres could join police

The Sri Lanka Police Department will create opportunities for former LTTE cadres who are well educated to join the police, Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon said. He said if the former LTTE cadres were willing to join the police after fulfilling the requirements, the Department would recruit them. “They need to have the required educational qualifications and pass the physical fitness tests”, he said.

Pensions and insurance for over 250,000 fishermen

Over 250,000 fishermen will be brought under the pension and insurance schemes launched by Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne told the Sunday Observer. The insurance scheme introduced in July last year will be made compulsory from April 1 this year. The scheme covers benefits to the family members, including educational assistance to their children up to the age of 18 and payments for hospitalisation for two weeks, the Minister said.

New method to be adopted for census

A new method will be adopted at the enumeration stage of the 2011 population and housing census to be conducted from February 27 to March 21 to support the need assessment in the development and administrative purposes by collecting data from the residents, Director, Census and Statistics Department H.R. Gunasekara said.
