Human trafficking – Lanka a transit hub
Sri Lanka has become a transit hub, a gateway to
the western hemisphere for human traffickers who smuggle men and
women from different parts of the globe via the country. Several
human smugglers operating in the country have been taken in for
questioning during the past several months, Police Media Spokesman,
SP Ajith Rohana told the Sunday Observer.
Actions speak louder than words
The biggest obstacle was the heavy presence of
deadly mines which the fleeing Tamil Tigers ‘sowed’ haphazardly. It
made mine clearing a time consuming and dangerous operation to be
conducted cautiously and thoroughly. Also, the situation in the
Vanni was far more complex in terms of the damage to infrastructure
and hidden arms caches. Above all, there were thousands of
battle-hardened LTTE killers among the IDPs to be resettled.
