The Government decision to increase the import tax on motor vehicles was aimed at controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the vehicle fleet of the country as excessive number of vehicles have been imported to the country during the past three years, Acting Media Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said today. “We had no other intention behind this move other than controlling the number of vehicles added annually to the road network”, the Minister said.

The Department of Wildlife and Conservation (DWLC) has launched an investigation why the army shot two wild elephants in Bundala yesterday. According to environmentalists one jumbo was shot in the head and the other sustain similar gun shot injuries.

US EPA waive its restriction on Lankan coir mats

Eschew imported solutions, foreign influences:

PSC, best forum to resolve national question

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday reiterated that the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) was the best forum to resolve the national question and called upon all parties to participate in the PSC rather than relying on imported solutions and foreign influences. He was addressing the nation at the 64th Independence Day commemoration in Anuradhapura.

President opens Deyata Kirula exhibition

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday opened the sixth Deyata Kirula national exhibition at Oyamaduwa in the Maha Villachchiya Divisional Secretariat in Anuradhapura. It will be open to the public till February 10. The exhibition site is on a 600-acre land. The exhibition consists of over 1,000 stalls run by government ministries, private sector agencies and the Security Forces.

Eight truck drivers from six countries will put their driving skills to the test in a new eight-episode Discovery Channel series,World’s Toughest Trucker, premiering on Monday, February 13, in the United States.
