Second SAFF Women’s Football Championship:

Nepal crush Pakistan - 8/0

Nepal began their campaign for the Second SAFF Women’s Football Championship title with an impressive goal scoring spree with their captain Jamuna Gurung scoring four goals in the first half to rout Pakistan by 8-0 in the second SAFF Women’s Football Championship worked off at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place, Colombo yesterday. Gurung fired goals early in the ninth minute and went on to finish with another three goals in the 32nd, 34th and 44th minute before she was replaced.

In the 16th minute and 51st minute striker Anu Lama scored two goals for Nepal who led 6-0 at lemons.

The other two goals were scored by midfielder Sajana Rana in the 42nd minute and Dipa Adhikari in the 72nd minute. In the first SAFF Women’s Football Championship which was held in Bangaldesh, Nepal had beaten Pakistan by 12-0 by fielding the same squad. The strong Nepal will now face Maldives on September 10 (Monday) at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place, Colombo in their next match.

Afghanistan hold Maldives

Underdogs Afganistan came up with the gallant display to hold the more fancied Maldives to a one-all draw in the second game played at the same venue yesterday. Afgan striker Hailai Agharndival put her team ahead within two minutes from the commencement with a superb kick from midfield which beat the Maldives goal keeper all ends up. There was no further scoring in the first half and score read 1-0 in favour of Afganistan at the breather.

The Maldives dominated the second half, but could not penetrate the rock hard Afghan defence. However in the 72nd minute, the Maldivian found the equalizer when Afza Fathimath sent in a scorcher from midfield to beat the Afghan goalkeeper and give Maldives a face saving one-all draw.
