Defeated candidates demand recount

Several candidates defeated at the August 17 polls have urged the Department of Elections to conduct urgent recounts of the preferential votes they polled, top sources from the Department said.

 

New US Ambassador presents credentials

Atul Keshap, the new US Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Maldives, presented his credentials on Friday (21) to President Maithripala Sirisena in Colombo. Ambassador Keshap is a career diplomat with the US Department of State, and has spent much of his career focusing on South Asia, including Sri Lanka.

 

Eighth Parliament to convene on Sept 1

The Eighth Parliament of Sri Lanka will convene on September 1 under the new national government formed by the UNP- led United National Front (UNF) for Good Governance and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP).

 

6100 candidates vie for 196 seats

Over 6100 candidates from a record 35 political parties and 200 independent groups are vying for 196 parliamentary seats at Monday’s General Elections. Polling will conducted in 12,314 polling centres island-wide, including in the seven islets in the Northern Province, from 7.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.

Facilities for 10,000 IDP voters in Puttalam

Ballot papers of nearly 10,000 displaced persons in the Puttalam District have been delivered and they have been assigned polling booths close to their residences to exercise their franchise at tomorrow’s Parliamentary Elections, Assistant Commissioner of Elections (ACE) for the Vanni Electoral District A.O.M.Nafeel told the Sunday Observer.

An information desk to facilitate arrangements for the first meeting of the first session of the new Parliament is being set up at the Parliamentary Complex for the convenience of the new MPS. It will be open from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., from August 23 to August 25.
