SL now among the best countries for children

President Mahinda Rajapaksa today said Sri Lanka is now among the best countries for children to live in. The President said this addressing the Universal Children's Day national ceremony at the National Youth Services Council premises in Maharagama this morning.

Jayalalithaa has been awarded a 4-year jail term by a Special Court which convicted her in a Rs.66 crore disproportionate asset case this afternoon.Following this, Jayalalithaa, also known as Amma (mother) by her party cadres, is disqualified as a member of Tamil Nadu assembly.

 

Japans Mount Ontake erupts after 7 years

Several climbers have been injured in Japan after Mount Ontake volcano erupted, sending huge plumes of ash and stones into the sky. Witnesses heard a "thunder-like" boom before the eruption at the 3,067m (10,120ft) peak, situated between Nagano and Gifu prefectures.

 

Senior DIG to finalise Uva election violence inquiries

IGP N K Illangakoon yesterday appointed a special Senior Deputy Inspector General (SDIG) to speed up and finalise the dragging investigations related to complaints of election violence and violations of election laws in the Uva Province, the Police Headquarters announced.

An arriving passenger, a sales assistant at the duty free shop and a broker were arrested by the Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport last night for trying to smuggle gold biscuits worth Rs.10 million into the country.

A 22-year-old male youth who tried to blackmail young women by threatening to upload their nude pictures on Facebook, if they failed to see him in private was arrested by the CID today, the police said.

 

Four soldiers die under a collapsing earth mound

Four soldiers died after an earth mound collapsed on them at Ambepussa Army Camp this afternoon, the army said. He said another officer who was injured in the incident was hospitalised.

 

Polls conclude with 70% voter turnout

At the close of polls at 4.00pm today, nearly 70 per cent of the 942, 760 registered voters in the province had cast their vote, Elections Department confirmed.

Scotland votes No to independence

Scotland has voted to stay in the United Kingdom after voters decisively rejected independence. With the results in from all 32 council areas, the "No" side polled 2,001,926, votes to 1,617,989 for "Yes".

Group tried to migrate on forged visas nabbed

A group of persons along with a child which tried to migrate to Malaysia on forged visas were arrested by the CID officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake on Tuesday.

CID grills 14 bank employees

Fourteen employees of a card centre of a reputed private bank in Colombo were taken in for questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following a Rs. 263 million loss, Police Media Spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody told the Sunday Observer.
