Power link between Lanka and India

Pre-feasibility studies for a high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission line between India and Sri Lanka have already been concluded and it will enable power sharing between the two countries, Director General of the Public Utilities Commision of Sri Lanka Damitha Kumarasinghe told the 22nd steering committee meeting of the South Asian Forum for Infrastructure Regulation in New Delhi.

“Sri Lanka is currently outside the grid and is experiencing power deficits at various intervals, so this is a big opportunityfor our country,” he said.

The plan is to have 500 megawatt which can be upgraded to a 1000 megawatt, a link which would extend from Madurai to Anuradhapura with a 50 km under sea cable.
