Delft Jetty: Construction work commences

6 November, 2016

The construction work of the first stage of Delft Jetty was launched by the Sri Lanka Navy on Friday, November 4.

In response to a request made by Governor of the Northern Province and under the directives of Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne, the Navy undertook the construction work providing man power and knowhow, as part of its social responsibility project. The financial resource for the construction was provided by the Ministry of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs through the District Secretary, Jaffna. The Commander Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Piyal De Silva presided over the ceremony which marked the commencement of the construction.Even though sufficient transport facilities have been developed in the main land of the Jaffna Peninsula with the dawn of peace, no such facility has been developed in Islets where adequate waterborne transportation facilities are essential for their routine work.

Non-availability of proper jetties to secure the passenger ferries used by the public residing in these Islets has created enormous difficulties on their livelihood and routine life.
