Kandy Sports Club was really fortunate to beat a fighting CR & FC by 32 (5 tries, 2 conversions, 1 drop goal) to 27 (4 tries, 2 conversions, 1 penalty) in their Dialog ‘A’ Division inter-club league
rugby second round match played at Longden Place yesterday. The winners led 24-8 at half time.
CR dished out a superb brand of rugby throughout the entire second half but a drop goal just before the close of play cost them the match.
Kandy opened scoring through a try by centre Danushka Ranjan and went into a 7-nil lead when full back Thilina Wijesinghe fired across the conversion.Kandy scored three more tries through Ranjan; prop forward Ganuka Dissanayaka and flanker Shehan Pathirana and CR closed down the gap with a brilliant unconverted try scored by scrum half Kavindu de Costa and a Prince Chamara penalty just before half time.
After the break Kandy increased their lead to 29-8 with Ranjan’s third try of the match and Wijesinghe missing the conversion.Within a couple of minutes CR scored a spectacular try through hooker Supun Warnakulasooriya who went through four Kandy defenders and dived
over under the post. Kavindu de Costa made no mistake with the conversion and the score stood at 29-15 in Kandy’s favour.
The Red shirts scored again through seasoned campaigner cum second row Ishan Noor which Costa put over to close the gap to 29-22. Kandy sealed the match in the 77th minute when off a ruck Wijesinghe put over a 30-metre drop goal to increase the lead to 32-22.CR scored a consolation unconverted try in injury time through their replacement full back Rehan Silva who made use of a fine three quarter move to take the final score to 32-27 in favour of Kandy.

yesterday, Navy registered a bonus point win over Air Force, the final
scores reading Navy 29 (4 tries 3 conversions, 1 penalty) to Air Force 21 (2 tries, 1 conversion, 3 penalties).
