China has announced officially that it will ban all trade in ivory by the end of 2017. This decision marks a huge step in the fight against the poaching and killing of elephants. China is currently the biggest buyer and seller of ivory in the world. Some experts estimate that around seven out of every ten pieces of ivory in the world ends up for sale in China.
The decision came as part of a big convention called Cites, which took place earlier this year in Africa. China’s State Council has said that the sale and processing of ivory will stop by 31 March. This means that that registered traders of ivory will be stopped from buying and selling it with the aim to stop the trade of ivory in China by the end of the year.
