UN Human Rights Council - 34th session: Resolution on Lanka on agenda

22 January, 2017

The 34th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council where Sri Lanka is also expected to be on the agenda, will be held from February 27 to March 24 at Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland.

An official source said Sri Lanka is pinning hopes that a resolution on Sri Lanka which is expected to taken up at this session with US as the proponents will be a procedural type one which will demand only technical cooperation and time bound updates from the High Commissioner.

“Since we are not a member of the HRC, we don’t have a direct voice in the process,” he said, adding, that with the INGOs and NGOs having a major stake in the negotiations, the pressure is very high on HRC members as well as Sri Lanka.

However, the source said he was confident that there would not be a harsh resolution on Sri Lanka since the government has done much on the ground. “But this resolution will be a yard stick of our achievements and would be quite interesting marker on our policies.”

However, a diplomatic source said it was too early to predict which way the current will flow, since the new US president Donald Trump who assumed office on Friday may take a different view point on the Geneva process than his predecessors.
