Dialog ‘A’ division rugby league second round

Havelock Sports Club thrashed hosts CR & FC by 31 points (3 tries, 2 conversions, 4 penalties) to 10 (1 try, 1 conversion, 1 penalty) in their second round match to edge closer to winning the Dialog ‘A’ Division inter-club league rugby championship at Longden Place yesterday. The winners led 11-10 at half time.

CR opened scoring in the 15th minute through an under the post try by wing three quarter Kavindu Perera off a brilliant 50-meter break by co-winger Sashan Mohamad and went into a 7-nil lead with full back Reeza Mubarak putting over the conversion.

Havies cut down the lead to 7-3 in the 18th minute and when Dulaj Perera put over a 30-metre penalty. In the 29th minute Perera put over another penalty this time from 45 metres to reduce the gap to 7-6. CR increased the lead to 10-6 with a 35-meter Mubarak penalty in the 36th minute.

Just before lemons in the 40th minute Havelock’s grab the lead for the first time 11-10 with a try scored by number eight Sudarshana Muthuthantri. Perera missed the conversion.

After the break in the 54th minute Havelock’s stretched their lead to 14-10 when Perera put over a 40-metre penalty. Within a couple of minutes Havies scored again in the 62nd minute through

another 30-meter penalty fired across by Perera. Havies led 17-10. Havelock’s scored a try in the 70th minute of play through hooker Liston Flatney and with Perera making no mistake with the conversion took their tally to 24-10.

Havelock’s sealed the match in the 76th minute when scrum half Sudam Sooriarachchi sneaked through the CR defence to score under the post off a quick penalty tap. Perera made the conversion again enabling them to score an important 31 points to 10 victory and keep their chances alive of winning the league title.
