Indian national arrested for photographing near Temple Trees

An Indian national was arrested yesterday in the vicinity of the Prime Minister’s House in Kollupitiya by undercover Police officers deployed for surveillance duties during the Independence Day celebrations.

According to Police Media Spokesperson DIG Priyantha Jayakody the individual had been behaving in a suspicious manner and had been taking photographs opposite Temple Trees when apprehended by the officers who were on civil observation duty.

The suspect is said to be 35-year old Bharatha Muttukumar Atchikulam from Tamil Nadu who is currently employed at a private firm in Kotahena.

“He was arrested around 11 a.m. and was taken in for further questioning” Jayakody said adding that the Indian Embassy has also been notified regarding the arrest.

According to sources, the suspect claims he was taking photographs of the Independence Day celebratory decorations. The Police say the suspect resides in the Wattala area during his time in the country.

The suspect remains in Police Custody and is being questioned by Police. Kollupitiya Police are carrying out further investigations into the incident.
