Over 2,500 school counsellors to be appointed

The Ministry of Education will recruit 2,753 qualified and experienced teachers who possess professional experience in counselling and psychological guidance, as Counsellors.

It has been found that many senior students of leading schools countrywide suffer from mental depression, and problematic issues. These students are miserable and helpless as there are no matured elders and teachers who could understand them, even to listen to their burning mental problems.

Due to pressure of work, both teachers and parents have no time to look into the grievances of young children, it has been found.

Akila viraj Kariyawasam, Minister of Education and Kurunegala district UNP parliamentarian has instructed top officials of his Ministry to recruit teachers good at counselling for the 3,768 schools countrywide. In addition, 2,753 graduates will also be recruited shortly, to fill the existing vacancies in remote and national schools.
